Learning Disability Week 2019

28/05/2019

LD Week

This year's Learning Disability Week is focused on how sport and physical activity can help reduce isolation and loneliness.  LD Week runs from 17-23rd June and we would like to encourage you to, wherever possible, discuss this with your customers and think about how the ideas could work in your setting.

Sport and physical activity between people with and without a learning disability can also help to improve attitudes and challenge negative views towards people with a learning disability.  Mencap provides a number of resources on their website including a list of inclusive Gyms.  The Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) is a programme that supports gyms to become more welcoming and accessible for people with a disability. http://www.activityalliance.org.uk/get-active/inclusive-gyms

It's not all about sport though and encouraging customers to engage in more physical movement and activity is something that we will be covering at our annual customer conference on 18 June in Winchester.  Mencap has an initiative on their website called `the Round the World Challenge' which aims to support people to get out and get active in a way that is flexible, fun and empowering.  You can read more about it and see if this would be something useful for your customers to take part in. https://www.mencap.org.uk/about-us/our-projects/mencap-sport/round-world-challenge

More information will be provided over the next couple of weeks and as always, please let us know what you are up to and send us your pics.  Thank you marketing@advanceuk.org
